”During my time at Bethel College, I was a DJ and student manager for BC Pilot Radio. My experiences as manager and the skills I learned working with radio equipment, prepared me for a job after college. Since graduation, I have worked as a producer at a local radio station and currently run the commercial production department at our station.”

Every student in our program completes at least one internship before graduation, and for many of our students, the internship experience has led to a full-time job.

Student Media Opportunities

By the end of our 36 credit-hour major, you’ll have a career-ready portfolio and a variety of hands-on experience, both on campus and in the local community, based on your interests and skills. You can also earn up to 12 hours of academic credit for working in our student media program. In the following areas of student media, our students have developed a variety of skills while working in areas that appeal to their passions.

sports network

Bethel Sports Network

If you are interested in sports broadcasting this is the opportunity for you. The Bethel Sports Network is run entirely by students and provides them with experience in all phases of sports broadcasting. The network does live production of various sporting events on campus.  You can work in front of the camera as a play-by-play announcer, sideline reporter, or as an analyst. There are positions for people who love videography and want the challenge of live camera work. You can also work as a director, technical director, or producer. Its great experience and a lot of fun. Experiences: play-by-play, reporting, color commentary, videography, directing, technical directing, producing.

Bethel Beacon

Students on staff with the Bethel Beacon generate story ideas, assign and write stories. A chief photographer is also on staff, using the latest digital equipment. The staff is committed to good journalism. Student editors and the chief photographer receive a salary. Experiences: writing, editing, photography and graphic design.

helm yearbook

Helm Yearbook

The Helm is an award-winning yearbook that is produced every school year by a student-led committee and distributed the following fall semester to full-time traditional students as a CD, free of charge. Hard copies are available for students to purchase as well. It is produced using InDesign and Photoshop CS6. Experiences: project management, writing, copy editing, graphic design, layout, photography and photo editing.

BC Pilot Radio

BC Pilot Radio is a student-run internet radio station based in the Student Media Center. We strive to provide you with the best Christian/Alternative music and programming while giving our students outstanding training and experience. The station webcasts music and other programming 24/7 on BCPilotRadio.comExperiences: radio announcing (disc jockey), graphic design, web design, audio mixing and production, and station management.

prime time

Bethel Prime Time

Bethel Prime Time is a 30-minute TV news magazine show about life at Bethel College. Students determine the content, conduct the interviews, shoot the video and write the stories. The show is the outcome of a class on TV news. Experiences: videography, video editing, TV package reporting, news anchoring, and producing. Take a look at past Prime Time shows in the archive.

Staff & Faculty

With a rather eclectic educational and professional background, Elizabeth McLaughlin has a B.S. in English and speech communication from Taylor University, a Master of Ministries from Bethel College, and Ph.D. in communication studies from Regent University.

McLaughlin has had a broad background in advertising and public relations, serving in several local not-for-profits and local agencies as public relations director, account executive and copywriter. She was an owner and partner in a local advertising agency for five years.

Theo Williams primarily teaches speech communication, but also takes advantage of opportunities to teach other courses, especially those that focus on cross cultural issues. He is a native of Michigan City, Ind. He has an associate of arts in journalism and a bachelor of arts in communication from Bethel College. He earned a master of arts in Urban Ministry from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 2004 and also has his Ph.D.

When he is not teaching, he is an avid writer and spoken word poet, with a published full-length CD entitled, 24-7-365: Life’s Journal. He has been a guest speaker at numerous churches, Christian colleges and conferences.
